Sportship ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following information when you create an account or use Sportship:

• Account information: email address, username, first and last name, and password (stored as a secure hash)
• Profile information: profile picture, bio, sport preferences, and skill ratings
• Location data: your approximate location, used to show nearby games and venues. We only access location when you use the app and only with your permission.
• Activity data: games played, wins, hours played, sportsmanship ratings, and experience points
• Social data: friends list, blocked users, team memberships, and messages sent within the app

2. How We Use Your Information

• To create and manage your account
• To show you nearby sports games and venues
• To connect you with other players and teams
• To track your sports stats and progress
• To send in-app notifications about games and invites
• To improve and maintain the app

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

• Google Places API: used to search for and display sports venues. Google's privacy policy applies to data processed by this service. See Google Privacy Policy.
• MongoDB Atlas: our database is hosted on MongoDB Atlas, with servers located in the United States.
• Railway: our backend server is hosted on Railway, located in the United States.

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We do not share your data with advertisers. Your data is only used to operate the Sportship service.

Some profile information (username, name, profile picture, sport skills) is visible to other users of the app by default. You can set your profile to private in your account settings.

5. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information:

• Passwords are stored using bcrypt hashing and are never stored in plain text
• All communication between the app and our servers uses HTTPS encryption
• Authentication tokens (JWT) expire after 24 hours

6. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data will be removed from our systems within 30 days.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Request correction of inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your account and associated data

8. Children's Privacy

Sportship is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
